WIPO IP Management Clinic (IPMC) – Supporting Maldivian SMEs in Branding and IP Commercialization : Maldives Creative Economy

Introduction

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT), in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), invites expressions of interest from Maldivian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), entrepreneurs, and creators to participate in the WIPO IP Management Clinic (IPMC). This initiative is designed to strengthen the Maldives’ creative economy by equipping selected participants with practical tools to integrate intellectual property (IP) into their business strategies. The project will launch at Maldives Expo 2025, taking place from 26th to 30th May 2025, with IP experts providing on-site support to businesses, followed by continued assistance online.

Program Objectives

The overall goal is to provide tailored guidance to eligible SMEs on how to use IP as a strategic business asset. Specific objectives include:

• Equipping participants with tools and knowledge to:
• Identify and protect their IP assets
• Develop branding, marketing strategies and maximize potential through IP
• Formulate IP strategies and manage IP portfolios
• Monetize IP through licensing and collaboration
• Mitigate IP-related risks and enforce IP rights
• Supporting the scaling-up of businesses through IP-based models
• Generating local success stories to inspire and inform the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem

Program Overview

• Program Duration: 4 months
• Number of Participants: Up to 30 SMEs and/or creative entrepreneurs
• Format: 1 on 1 Format
• Activities Include:
• Introductory workshop and launch event
• one-on-one sessions with IP and business experts
• Support in developing short IP strategies and business reports for the business
• Publication of success stories via MEDT and WIPO platforms

Eligibility Criteria

Interested entities/individuals should meet the following:

• Be based in the Maldives
• Operate within the creative or innovation-based industries
• Be a registered SME or active entrepreneur with a clear business model
