The International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) works to develop, support and promote socially and environmentally responsible pole-and-line and handline tuna fisheries around the world. IPNLF’s ambition is to contribute to thriving coastal fisheries, including the people, communities, businesses and seas connected with them. We are an international charity working across science, policy and the seafood sector. We use the influence of the market to develop and demonstrate the value of one-by-one caught tuna to thriving coastal fisheries, and the people and seas they connect. IPNLF officially registered as a charity in the UK in early 2012.

The Maldives, considered home to one-by-one fisheries, has number of activities being implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture and Marine Research Centre. The main areas of work include supporting fisheries data capture, demonstrating at-sea best practice and bycatch and catch sampling.

To expand the Maldives bycatch / catch sampling program, IPNLF is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person to fill its newly created Assistant Fisheries Research Officer post. Based on Malé your primary task would be to undertake regular handline and pole-and-line fishing trips with local fishermen from locations throughout the country. You would be required to be at sea around 20 days a month. Acting as a fishery observer your primary task would be to keep records of catch and bycatch including taking of biological samples.

You would be working independently often in difficult conditions requiring to organize logistics in the islands. Excellent inter-personal skills and an ability to effectively communicate with the fishermen is essential. You will be required to compile the data and a report following each trip. Prior training will be given before commencing the work. The job would be preferable for a Maldivian.

Minimum Academic Qualification: GCSE Advanced Level Certificate.

Remuneration: A handsome salary of MVR 17,000 per month (paid in US$). Domestic travel, food and accommodation would be provided

Send your resume including a letter of interest to [email protected] before the closing deadline.
