Professional Position under the Mariculture Research and Development Programme

The Marine Research Centre (MRC) was founded in 1984 as the research arm of the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture (MoFA). The Mariculture Research and Development Programme (MRDP) is one of the core areas of MRC’s work, focusing primarily on developing hatchery as well as grow out technology of selected species, applicable to Maldivian environments. Focus species include groupers and sandfish. A priority project on the hatchery production of milkfish for use as bait for the local pole-and-line tuna fishery has recently been initiated. This project involves the establishment of a backyard milkfish hatchery on the Island of Maakoa, Lhaviyani Atoll, and mass production of bait-sized milkfish in a multi-species hatchery planned in the southern atolls. We are seeking dynamic, self-motivated and capable individuals to join our team to help make our milkfish production project a success. 

 

Position: 

Facility Manager

Duty Station:

Marine Research Centre, Male’; Maakoa Island, Lhaviyani Atoll; Mariculture Training and Demonstration Facility, Maniyafushi Island, Male’ Atoll and Multi-species hatchery to be established in the Maldives

Contract Duration:

1 year (with possibility of extension depending on performance)

Salary:

Negotiable, based on experience

Responsibilities:

  • Overall management of the milkfish production facility including but not limited to the following:
    • Broodstock management
    • Spawning
    • Incubation
    • Fry quality control
    • Feed management
    • Health management
    • Record keeping and data management
    • Reporting
    • Oversight of administration: stock maintenance, procurement, repair and maintenance
  • Conduct hatchery and nursery production of milkfish
  • Supervise all hatchery workers, assign tasks, manage work schedules and evaluate staff performances.
  • Develop a staff capacity building plan for milkfish hatchery, nursery and grow-out production.
  • Conduct hands-on training in milkfish, hatchery, nursery and grow-out production in collaboration with MRC technical staff.

Qualification

  • At minimum a Bachelor’s degree in aquaculture or a related field
  • At least 5 years of experience managing hatchery facilities – preference will be given for candidates who demonstrate experience in milkfish hatchery operations

Experience/skill:

  • Experience in calculating feed rations, loading densities and configurations of rearing units, water quality assessments and operation system assessments.
  • Knowledge of basic equipment required to operate the system
  • Computer literacy
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Good communication and team management skills
  • Ability to work long hours, in uninhabited islands
  • Be in excellent health condition

Position:

Hatchery technician

Duty Station:

Marine Research Centre, Male’; Maakoa Island, Lhaviyani Atoll; Mariculture Training and Demonstration Facility, Maniyafushi Island, Male’ Atoll and Multi-species hatchery to be established in the Maldives

Contract Duration:

1 year (with possibility of extension depending on performance)

Salary:

USD 1,200 – 1,700 (based on experience)

Responsibilities:

  • Routine milkfish rearing duties including but not limited to the following:
    • Broodstock management
    • Spawning and egg incubation
    • Larval rearing and fry quality control
    • Timely feeding maintenance of feeding records
    • Cleaning tanks
    • Monitoring and recording tank water quality
    • Growth and health monitoring
    • Maintaining records of production, feeding, growth and health
  • Operation of hatchery and general lab.oratory equipment: pumps, blowers, microscopes, etc
  • Hatchery maintenance
    • Routine cleaning of hatchery premises
    • Routine cleaning and maintenance of hatchery equipment and machinery
    • Carry out minor repairs of hatchery equipment and machinery
  • Assist with hatchery building projects, as required
  • Assist in mariculture training activities conducted by MRC
  • Assist in other field activities of the project

Qualification/

experience

  • Associate degree in aquaculture or a related field with a minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a milkfish hatchery, OR
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in a milkfish hatchery

Experience/skill:

  • Knowledge of basic equipment required to operate the system
  • Computer literacy
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Good communication and team management skills
  • Ability to work on weekends and holidays, stationed on an uninhabited island
  • Be in excellent health condition
