Research Assistant

Introduction:

The Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology at The Maldives National University wishes to hire one (1) energetic, self-motivated, and enthusiastic research assistant for a project on the health impacts of imported chicken. This position involves lab experiments and administrative duties. Candidates with a background in microbiology, molecular biology, or related fields interested in food safety research are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Principal Investigator in both laboratory experiments and administrative duties related to the project.
  • Engage in various stages of sample collection, processing, and analysis to investigate the microbiological safety of imported chicken.
  • Utilize and apply microbiological and molecular biology techniques to further the project's research goals.
  • Data Analysis: Assist in managing and analysing data.
  • Laboratory Maintenance: Contribute to the operational management of the laboratory, including maintaining equipment, procuring supplies, and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work effectively with the research team and participate actively in team meetings.

 

Deliverables:

  • Develop a comprehensive research protocol outlining the methodology for assessing the health impacts of imported chicken.
  • Execute Laboratory Experiments according to the established protocol.
  • Engage in various stages of sample collection, processing, isolation, and identification of bacteria.
  • Record experimental procedures, results, and observations in a systematic manner.
  • Optimize research methods and protocols to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate effectively with the Principal Investigator and research team, providing regular updates on project progress and findings.
  • Generate literature reviews and reports summarizing findings, including tables, graphs, and statistical analyses, to support research outcomes.
  • Established laboratory protocols, safety procedures, and regulatory standards throughout the research process.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functioning and calibration for accurate results.
  • Procure necessary supplies and materials, ensuring timely availability for ongoing research activities.

 

Required qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated experience in microbiological techniques, especially in the isolation and identification of bacteria.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology methods, including DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are essential.

 

Added advantages:

  • Master’s degree in microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field with at least 1 year of relevant experience.

 

  • Proficiency in using bioinformatics tools and software for data analysis.
