Public Consultation for the National Waste Management Policy
(2023-2027)
Date and Time: 29 September 2022, 13:30hrs
Venue/location: (Maldives National University Auditorium)
Background & Objective
Since the introduction of the first National Solid Waste Management Policy, strengthening waste and resource management has become a key priority for the Maldives. The government’s commitment to a clean environment is continuous, among others through the implementation of the Strategic Action Plan (SAP) and the Single Use Plastics Phase Out Plan. A new National Waste Management Policy is being developed. The new Policy encompasses the principles of waste hierarchy and circular economy. It aims to engage the local communities and the private sector to shift towards a Sustainable Development model that will view Waste as Resource. The priority will be given to avoidance of waste generation and reuse as the optimum option, followed by recycling, energy recovery, and as a last and less desired option by landfilling.
The aim of the public consultation will be to present pragmatic and ambitious goals and measures of the Policy. The opinion and feed-back from the public will be highly acknowledged.
