Project “Development of a Coastal Surveillance Airship to Monitor and Control the EEZ”

TOR for a Research Assistant

Introduction:

The Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology at The Maldives National University wishes to hire one (1) energetic, self-motivated, and enthusiastic Research Assistant for the project on “Development of a Coastal Surveillance Airship to Monitor and Control the EEZ”.

2500/-

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a literature review on optimal design structures of UAV for long endurance and high altitude application.
  • Find out the technical specification and operational conditions of a high altitude UAV for Maldivian environment
  • Identify the sensors and actuators required for autonomous operations, communications with ground station, monitoring and surveillance.
  • Device an algorithm to estimate and identify fault in sensors and actuators
  • Study the design requirements and specification of an autonomous navigation system
  • Study the technical requirements for Ariel 2D and 3D modelling and surveying to be incorporated in the airship
  • Identify the possible threats and challenges for autonomous operation of a UAV around the Maldivian coastal zone including cyber-attacks and other forms of false data injection attacks.

Deliverables:

  • A detailed requirements with components required to prototype a UAV for the given application
  • Technical specification and operational conditions of a high altitude UAV for Maldivian environment
  • An autonomous navigation system with a ground station graphical interface to control (if required) and view the real-time location of the airship.
  • A detailed technical specification of the Ariel 2D and 3D modelling mechanism
  • List of sensors and actuators required (with specification) for autonomous operations, communications with ground station, monitoring and surveillance
  • An adaptive algorithm to handle the fault in sensors and actuators
  • A detailed vulnerability analysis for the airship with safety risk management and self-defence techniques and protocols

Required qualifications:

  • Degree in relevant field.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Technical report writing skills in English.
  • Basic computing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Added advantages:

  • Degree in Engineering/Electrical/Electronic/Computer Science or related field.
  • Degree in Aeronautics/Aerodynamics or related field.
  • Experience in hardware design.
