Recruiting an MSc by Research Student for a Climate Adaptation Project in the Maldives (One year full time)

Project RECOVER (Resilience to Climate Vulnerability and Environmental Risk - with a focus on Small Island Developing States - SIDS) is a partnership between three SIDS (Mauritius, Maldives and Fiji), led by the University of Waterloo, Canada. SIDS are on the frontlines of climate change and need transformational adaptation strategies urgently. The project focuses on enhancing small islands’ capacity to adapt to climate change through more inclusive, and research-informed decision environments. The three SIDS will serve as “hubs of innovation” for scalable and systems-changing climate resilience approaches. The Maldives National University (MNU) is the local partner institution reposible for implementing the project activities in the Maldives.

The project is recruiting an MSc by Research student to undertake research on objectives (1 and 4) focusing on island circular economy and nature-based solutions for the Maldives. The student will be enrolled at the University of Mauritius (UoM – www.uom.ac.mu) for a one year full time MSc by Research programme (https://www.uom.ac.mu/index.php/research/research-students), starting in September 2024. The student will be mostly stationed at the Maldives National University, Maldives but is expected to travel to Mautritius for a brief period of time.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eigible candidates should meet the following requirements:

• Completed a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geography, engineering, or a related discipline
• Have a strong academic record (at least an upper second class, first division or equivalent) with research potential.
• Demonstrable interest in climate adaptation science, with experience in researching or working with vulnerable communities impacted by climate change being advantageous.
• Possess skills / knowledge or tools that can tackle at least one or more project-related topics such as circular economy, material and energy stock and flow analysis, risks and/or systems dynamic modelling, geospatial analysis, nature-based solutions or related.
• Exhibit excellent written and oral communication skills.

Benefits:

Successful applicant will work in student teams, and engage in peer-to-peer learning with students from Canada and the Asia-Pacific. As part of this innovative project, the candidate will receive mentorship from researchers in RECOVER and also have opportunities to interact with a global community of researchers within the CLARE program (https://clareprogramme.org).

The project will cover tution fees and provide some financial support to the candidate. The candidate will also receive mentorship to publish the thesis in the form of a multi-authored science article as lead author as well as be eligible for the award of an MSc from the University of Mauritius upon meeting the requirements of the university.
